Advocacy

Health Advocacy: "The processes by which the actions of individuals or groups attempt to bring about social and/or organization change on behalf of a particular health goal, program, interest, or population" (NACCHO).

Through the power of advocacy, public health initiatives such as seat belt, tobacco prevention, safe drinking water, and nutrition labeling laws have been put into place. For the betterment of the community, it is necessary that public health professionals and others with expertise and experience in the field, educate and advocate public health initiatives to lawmakers through evidence-based research. Additionally, informed citizens have the power to educate and influence their elected officials about critical public health issues. Constituents can call, send emails/letters, and reach out through social media to voice their concerns.

The NACCHO Advocacy Toolkit aids constituents in voicing their concerns. Some tips included are:
  • Prepare and practice the message
  • Make sure the message is clear, concise, and compelling
  • Frame the message to answer the question, "so what?"
  • Present yourself as an expert resource and provide examples from your community
  • Be confident
