Overdose Awareness Throughout August
Alliance to HEAL and Partners Collaborate to Remember Those Lost to Overdose in our Community.
Communities all over the Coulee Region and around the world are coming together throughout August to remember those who have died or suffered permanent injury due to drug overdose.
Observed on August 31 every year, International Overdose Awareness Day seeks to create better understanding of overdose, reduce the stigma of drug-related deaths, and create change that reduces the harms associated with drug use.
Alliance to HEAL and its partners will be conducting multiple events during the month of August:
By holding these events this year, the people of the Coulee Region are joining themselves to a global movement for understanding, compassion, and change.
The situation is especially severe in the US. In 2021, provisional data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated there were 107,622 drug overdose deaths, an increase of 15% from 2020. La Crosse County is no exception, seeing 38 drug overdose deaths in 2022 up over 72% from 2019, and on track to set a record high this year.
About the Alliance to HEAL:
The Alliance to HEAL (A2H) was launched in August of 2018. A2H successfully brought together over 80 community members who worked together across multiple work groups to heal the broken continuum of care for people living in La Crosse County with substance use disorders. It is our mission that together as an Alliance, we will halt the devastating effects caused by substance use; we will work locally with conviction, with unity, and with a commitment to support our youth and adults.
We must reduce stigma to encourage people to ask for help. Visit Dose of Reality for more information.
